Skin is the largest organ of the body and is the first and foremost shield which protects our internal organs from the detrimental and noxious external environment.
There are many myths and misconceptions regarding
skin diseases. It is said that “Once a skin patient, always a skin patient “.that skin diseases are incurable and extremely chronic. But in about 60-70% of skin diseases, there is either a cure or an appreciable control. It is also believed that there are no emergencies in skin. Although there are less emergencies that other branches of medicines, we do have emergencies, which can occasionally end up fatally.
Although there are more than 3000
skin conditions, I will talk on only 3 – 4 of them, because of the stigma and fear associated with these.
Vitiligo or Leucoderma is not contagious. It is a harmless condition, where only the color of the skin changes. On taking treatment most of the time patients are benefited to a great extent.
Leprosy is mildly infectious, but is a 100% curable
skin disease, regardless of the stage and extent. It is not transmitted by casual contact.
Psoriasis, which is very chronic and distressing to the patient, can also be brought under control in the majority of cases.
The onslaught or TV radio magazines etc providing all kinds of home treatment and remedies have resulted in an increase in
skin reactions, which are self induced in many cases.
Patients who have allergic tendency should avoid things like cosmetics, perfumes, artificial jewelry, nickel, hair dye and some plants like Parthenium. (congress grass)
Besides climatic factors, like sunlight can also induce reactions in the exposed parts of the body because of the ultraviolet rays.
Dry skin is an aging process like graying of hair and wrinkling of Skin. Regular application or any cold cream or coconut oil at night, especially in winter can prevent many potential Skin problems. In the end, summarizing, to keep the

- Take balanced and nutritious diet with lots of fresh fruits or vegetables.
- Good sound sleep for 6-8 hrs, daily.
- Maintain Skin cleanliness and hygiene.
- Avoid usage of unnecessary cosmetics and home remedies.
- Seek medical advice as early as possible, when you notice something suspicious on the skin.
