Menopause is the last phase of a woman’s life, and is gaining a lot of importance today. The federation of obstetrics and Gynecology has formed a ‘National Menopausal Society’ only to cater to the needs of elderly women. Stoppage of menses indicates cessation of ovarian activity. When ovaries stop functioning the feminine hormone estrogen falls in a woman. Joint pains, Dryness of skin, urinary incontinence, Heart Disease are common ailments due to estrogen fall. Now-a-days we have therapy called `HRT’ where estrogen pills / patches are used in regular intervals to avoid or lower risk of complications of
menopause. They are well accepted but contra indicated in cases of Hypertension, Diabetes, Heart Disease and Liver Disease.
In extremely obese patients estrogen is given cautiously. Injudicious use of HRT can precipitate cancer. Hence consultation at a good clinic is advised before its use. Calcium and Vitamin D3 are important supplements. All women should be in the practice of regular walks and aerobic exercise throughout their lives. Regular exercise brings with it loads of good
health and mental comfort in your and old age. A women is the pivot of her family – “A Healthy mother means a Healthy and Happy Family”.
