Information on Glaucoma

Like normal blood pressure there is normal pressure in the eye which is maintained by water like fluid called aqueous humor. Glaucoma is necessary to maintain the eye ball in its proper shape. Normally enough fluid is secreted inside the eye and drained out through various outlets.

This maintains normal pressure and shape of the eye. If more fluid is created (or) the drainage channels become narrow fluid accumulate within the eye. Glaucoma optic nerve which carries normal light impulses to the brain enables us to see. There are medicines to reduce fluid formation and increase drainage.

If medicines do not help, an opening is created by means of laser for fluid to drain out of the eye. If these measures do not help operation is done to create new drainage channels. These Eye Infections may affect children at birth when it is called congenital Glaucoma. In adults it is allied chronic simple Glaucoma.

If not detected and treated in time there is danger of diminution of vision eventually leading to preventable blindness, high blood pressure, diabetes etc. diabetes after cataract, corneal diseases and Glaucoma is a leading cause of preventable blindness many countries. In untreated or poorly controlled diabetic patients the wall of blood vessels develop cracks through which blood leaks into the eye causing recurrent attacks of hemorrhage resulting in blindness.

It is like a crack developing in a water pipe which can be either changed or repaired by soldering. This leaking spots can be closed with lasers, it is therefore absolutely necessary that regular eye check up is done by qualified ophthalmologist.

It is advisable for proper and timely Eye Care, detect preventable cause of blindness but as a rule, yearly eye check ups should be made compulsory in all schools children. This may also be done in adults and also more regularly in patients suffering from eye disease.
