Abdomen Pain



Pain in the abdomen is the most common symptom felt by most of us at least once in a life time. This is a normal physiological phenomenon, in children, the commonest cause of pain, is due to worms in the abdomen. In the young, the common cause of pain in the abdomen is due to appendicitis or diseases of the appendix. In the young adults, the commonest cause of pain is due to peptic ulcer or gall bladder diseases of the stomach. In the elderly people the commonest cause of pain in the abdomen may be due to cancer of the abdominal organs.

When there is pain in the abdomen the doctor always asks the patients to show the exact site of pain with the tip of his index finger. Because the pain is usually felt on the surface of the abdomen depending upon the organ underlying there, it also helps the doctor to think of diseases which are common at that site.

Appendicitis is very much less common in villages and in the remote areas. In cities and big towns the incidence of the disease is increasing. This is because of the fact that the people are consuming food with less cellulose and fibers. This disease is easy to diagnose and treat. The permanent treatment is by removal. Modern surgery is made safe by the latest laparoscopic method where no long incision is made on the body. There are no stitches, no pain, no bleeding, no ugly scars, no need of removing sutures and most important thing is, the patient can go home within 12 to 24 hours and resume his duty within 2 or 3 days.

The commonest cause of pain in the epigastria is due to stomach ulcers which are commonly seen in young adults. The common cause of pain in lumber region is due to kidney disease. Pain in hypochondriac region is due to gall bladder disease. The common cause of pain in the centre of the abdomen around the umbilicus is due to small intestinal diseases. Pain in the left iliac fossa is commonly due to ameobiasis in the pelvic colon. Pain in the supra pubic region is commonly due to bladder and uterine diseases in females.
